Today we celebrate Hosh …

By June 7, 2019 No Comments

Today we celebrate Hoshana Rabba, the seventh and last day of Sukkot. Although it is not a Yom Tov, the day is very holy. Today our decrees for the year are stamped.
The name of the day comes from the willow twig, which is one of the four kinds (etrog (citron),lulav(the palm),hadassim (myrtle),and aravot (willow).
The willow represents the simple Jew, the one that is not so learned and doesn’t do much, nevertheless this day is dedicated to that Jew.
The Baal Shem Tov draws a parallel between human simplicity, defined by a lack of learning and spiritual sophistication. And the Divine simplicity. The Baal Shem Tov describes the simple faith of the simple Jew as something to emulate. Sometimes when we know too much and we do so much we forget to be humble and instead we can fall into arrogance. This is why this special day celebrates the simple faith, a faith that is not blurred by sophistication and instead is maintained innocent and pure. This simplicity must be a part of us always so we can put our trust in G-d always.
