This weeks Tora Portion “Mishpatim” refers to civil laws between men and men.
The Torah is the overarching guide to life. Besides its legal side, the Torah has a spiritual side; it is not only the guide to how to live life in this world but also the guide to how to transcend life in this world and forge a relationship between G-d and us.
We are intended to relate to the Torah’s rational laws as part of our transcended relationship with G-d. Just as much as the mystical, inexplicable rules and rites that we naturally view as expressing our covenantal side of our relationship with Him, the more prosaic, legal details that are contractual and logical ensure that the world is run according to G-d’s plan and don’t let us loose sight of the Divine nature and purpose of it all making this world a dwelling home for H”S.
