This iconic photo was taken on Friday afternoon, right before Shabbat on Chanukah 1931. The grandmother of @humansofjudaism realized that this was a historic photo, and she wrote in the back of the picture “ their flag wishes to see the death of Judah, but Judah will always survive, and our light will outlast their flag.”
After lighting the Menorah we recite a prayer: “ Throughout the eight days of Chanukah, these lights are sacred, and we are not permitted to make use of them, but only to look at them, in order to express thanks and praise to Your great name for your miracles, Your wonders and Your salvations.”
Today we light the Menorah before sun down, we light it during the day because once we light our Shabbat candles we can’t light the Menorah.
Tonight is extra special because we bring extra light into our homes and to the world. Take advantage of the moment and meditate what a great miracle you are, remember our history and appreciate who you are. Take a moment to ask yourself “which is my piece in this puzzle?” And realize that without you, it could never be completed. Think about all the goodness H”S has offered you and all the love you have received from others. Meditate on the love you give to others and the acts of kindness you have the privilege to fulfill.
Conclude the meditation by giving THANKS and praise H”S for all His kindness.
