There is a famous story of a Yeshiva student who asked his Rebbe what were the effects of Lashon Hora (Negative Speech). The Rebbe told him “bring your pillow to the rooftop of the building and I’ll meet you there.” The student went up to the rooftop with his pillow, the Rebbe was waiting for him there. He took a pair of scissors and cut the pillow letting all the feathers fly with the wind, then he said to the student “go and pick them up”. The student answered “that is impossible, for sure many have flied farther away, I will never be able to retrieve all of them”. And the Rebbe answered ” my son, the same is with Lashon Hora, once you’ve said something it will travel farther than you know and you will never be able to take it back.”
