Shavuah Tov! Wishing everyone a blessed week.
This week we read Parashah “Vayeira” (Appeared) as in “ And the Eternal appeared to Avraham at Elonei the plain of Mamre.” (Bereshit 18:1)
Rashi cites the Midrash that H”S appeared to Avraham on the territory of Mamre because Mamre gave him advice to perform the circumcision. From here we learn the great merit of giving people good advise.
Others told Avraham not to do it, but Mamre advised differently and for this he was greatly rewarded.
The Pirkei Avot (Ethics of Father’s 2:7) states that when one asks advise from others one gains more understanding. The question arises: if in the end you will do what you yourself think it’s appropriate, why do you need to consult others?
Rav Chayim of Volozhin, explains to us that each person has a better inside knowledge of himself than any outsider could have. But at the same time, every person has some knowledge and understanding that you are missing. Therefore before making any major decisions, consult as many people as you can to take in ideas and information that can help you make the best decision.
