Shavuah Tov! Wishing everyone a beautiful and blessed week.
This week’s Parasha “Balak” is named after the wicked anti Semite king of Moav, who tried to eliminate the Jewish people by hiring Bilam a wicked prophet to send curses to them.
Rashi explains that Bilam was saying to G-d: “Even though I am not considered distinguished in Your eyes, I am still considered distinguished in the eyes of kings.”
Rabbi Yosef Dov Soloveitchik obm, noted that Rashi states that Bilam told the messengers, that came to take him to Balak, that perhaps G-d would not allow him to go with people who were not of high stature. He must consult G-d first. Then he tells G-d that Balak considered him more distinguished that G-d did.
We see here how an arrogant person plays games with others, even with G-d. The arrogant man tries to fool even G-d into giving him more respect an honor.
We shouldn’t live our lives trying to prove ourselves to others, a person should rather focus on improving his behavior and making himself a truly elevated person with sincerity and humility.
As the Pirkei Avot says: “Who is honored? The one who gives honor to others” (Avot 4:1)
