Rosh Chodesh Tov!!!
Today we count the 16th day of the Omer with “Gevurah She Be Tiferet” (Discipline in Compassion). For compassion to be effective it needs the discipline aspect to be involved. True empathy towards someone else comes when we have the capacity to give the other what he needs even if he doesn’t deserve it. Take for example a poor person in the street. Our logic could tell us: “don’t give, he is a bum, going to use it for drugs, etc…” When we act with “Gevurah She Be Tiferet” we would say: “this guy is hungry, what could I do for him to ease his suffering?” Here we are not judging and we are being able to think about someone else’s needs. Many soup kitchens have emerged because of individuals that are able to connect to someone else’s pain. To give someone else what he needs at the moment is the highest way of serving H”S. Sometimes restraining ourselves from giving is also what that person needs, may H”S give us the ability to discern and know when, where and how is the best way to help someone in need.
