In this week’s Parashah “Vayakhail” (Assembled) H”S says to Moses: “Whoever is of a willing heart, let him bring it, and offering of the Almighty.” (Shemot 35:5)
Rabbi Simcha Zissel of Kelm explained this verse that those who brought the offerings for the Mishkan (Sanctuary)should bring their hearts with their offering.
G-d created us with a heart because He wants our heart, our feelings and emotions to be part of our giving. We should work to generate generous and loving feelings when we give to someone else. To give is always good because no matter the intention the outcome is good, but when we give our heart we are also changing and elevating ourselves. Each donation will take us a step higher.
If we would see the tremendous opportunity G-d gives us every time someone asks for tzedakah as a gift from above for our own wellbeing we would never turn anyone away. In truth the receiver is the giver and the giver is the receiver of something much bigger that we could ever imagine.
