G-d said to Abraham:”Look toward heaven and count the stars,if it is possible for you to count them.” He then said to him:”so will be your descendants” (Bereshit 15:5)
H”S was not only showing Abraham that the Jewish people will eventually be as numerous as the stars, it’s metaphorical meaning is that they will sparkle like the stars;their light is so bright that even those walking in the thick of the night will not stumble. We have the responsibility as the descendants of Abraham to be a light on to others. We are the moral compass and the fortitude of the world. Our job is to lead by example behaving in the highest way possible.
When we don’t live accordingly then sadly H”S makes it dark for us and at those moments we have no other option but to shine.
Sadly it is when the Jews are put in complicated situations that we recognize each other and begin to take care of each other. We must do it when thing are good and show H”S that we don’t need trials and tribulations to bring out the best of us.
