Every year, on the Shab …

By June 7, 2019 No Comments

Every year, on the Shabbat preceding Purim we read the portion of Deuteronomy 25:17-19 in Shul, because of this, this upcoming Shabbat is known as “Shabbat Zachor.” Zachor means to REMEMBER and here specifically, we are commanded to remember what the nation of Amalek did to us when we came out of Egypt.
This nation of nomads surprised and attacked the spiritual weak individuals in the most inhumane way, eventually killing them. By attacking them Amalek demonstrated to all the world’s nations our vulnerability and dampened their awe of G-d, who through incredible means had taken the Jews out of Egypt.
The gematria (numerical value) of Amalek is “doubt.” And this H”S wants us to REMEMBER through out our existence and eradicate it from our mist.
The Jews during the Persian Empire were also confronted with Amalek. Wicked Haman was a descendant of Amalek. At that time in history the Jews had become very assimilated and spiritually weak. Thank G-d, through Mordechai and Queen Esther were able to strengthen their spiritual connection with H”S and in this way were saved from complete annihilation.
The story repeats itself generation after generation. It comes with different faces and movements, but at the end we have to REMEMBER what Amalek did to us, and by doing this we will find the answer to the problem. We need not doubt of who we are and what H”S wants from us, it is time to get responsible with our mission in life and live up for the purpose for which we were created.
