Welcome to “Battle Thursday’s,” the day in which we gain tools to win our battles against our Yetzer Hara (evil inclination).
In this week’s Torah Portion “Ki Sisa,” we are confronted with a sin that changed the course of history and to which we are still paying till today, “the sin of the golden calf.”
How can it be, that after the Jewish people received the Torah at Mt.Sinai, where they heard the voice of G-d and received the Torah as pure Tzadikim (righteous people), forty days later they fell to the lowest of the lowest by worshiping an idol and becoming degraded?
Our Sages teach that the higher a person is spiritually the bigger the yetzer hara , and the higher he is the lowest he can fall.
It is very easy to be a historian and come to the conclusion of why things happen, but when one is in the moment of a situation it is very hard to see the outcome and the why.
This is why our Torah is replete with stories of human failure, even from the greatest people, because it is through this stories that we can come to recognize our own story and make the right choices.
We learn that the root of the sin of the golden calf was “fear.” The children of Israel had miscalculated the forty days and thought Moses had to descend on that day. When he didn’t come down with the tablets, they fell into desperation and fear. It was such the extent of this fear that they saw Moses coffin in heaven and thought he had died. Fear can make us think and see things that are not real.
Understand your fears, see from where they come. Are they real of do they just come from negative thinking . Understanding is the first step we need to take to be able to recognize and address our fears and by doing this you are one step ahead in redeeming yourself.
