Tonight we will be entering the Hebrew month of Elul, the month in which we prepare to receive the head of the year when we celebrate the High Holidays on the month of Tishrei.
Elul is the month of LOVE and the renewal of our relationship with G-d and others.
The sign of Elul is Virgo, and one of the acronyms for this month is “Ani L’dodi V’dodi Li” (I am for my beloved and my beloved is for me).
This phrase of Song of Songs written by King Solomon, captures the very essence of a relationship, love must be reciprocal. First one initiates and then the other reciprocates.
In this month “I am for my beloved” is us initiating and courting H”S and then H”S responds to us in kind.
The same way I’m to my beloved my beloved is to me, shows a relationship in which the love reflects one another.
Thinking of love as a reflection is quite extraordinary: Look into the eyes of your beloved and you will see yourself.
This month teaches us that to have any relationship someone has to initiate. Love is proactive, not reactive or passive. If you want love in your life do not stand to wait for it. You must learn to give, to initiate, to let the other know.
In this month of Elul we have the opportunity to renew our relationship with G-d, we just have to give that first step and show Him that we love Him and you will see how He shows to you His love back.
