Tonight we light the fourth candle of Chanukah.
In the Gemara (Shabbos 21b) says that the cruse of pure olive oil which was found was sealed with the seal of the High Priest. This means that it hadn’t been touched.
When we are confronted to dark times, heaven forbid, both in the material and spiritual sense, and there are those who wish “to make them forget Your Torah and cause them to deviate from the statutes of Your Will.” For oil to be safeguarded so that it will remain pure and therefore can be used to kindle the entire Menorah, it must be protected with the seal of the High Priest.
In this context, this narrative offers a valuable lesson.
Although the Greeks were able to reach The Temple, they destroyed the altar and made the Menorah impure. But that small cruse of oil that was hidden away and looked after by the Kohen Gadol was left intact. And it was used to light lights that have been able to burn for thousands of years.
That pure light is the essence of our soul, which is sealed and protected. It doesn’t matter what we have been through in a personal or communal level, that inner light will always shine.
