Tonight we celebrate Rosh Chodesh Marcheshvan.
The Mazal of this month is Scorpio, which in Hebrew is “akrav.” This word can be seen to be composed by the word “ikar” (main) and the letter “Beit”( which when fully spelled out is identical to the word Bayit (house)). Referring to the Third Temple and alluding to the prophesies that it will be built in this month.
The flood which also occurred in this month, thoroughly cleansed the earth, which was dipped under water as if it had been submerged in a Mikvah to be purified of all the impurity it had accumulated.
The word for “ark” is teivah, which also means “word”. According to our sages the words “Torah” (instruction) and “Tefillah” (prayer) express the ark’s essential meaning and serve to protect one from the “storms” that life sometimes brings.
Tishrei was a month of “being”, whereas Marcheshvan is a month of “doing”, a month where we implement all the inspiration that we carry from the previous month.
Our strengths come from H”S unconditional love towards us and the pleasure it gives Him to see us succeed. If we are armed with the right tools (Torah, Tefillah (prayer) and Tzedakah (charity), we will surely accomplish much more than we ever dreamed off.
