Tonight is Rosh Chodesh Av, otherwise known as Menachem Av (the consoler of Av).. The name Av literally means “Father”.
The low point of this month is the 9th of Av or Tisha B’Av, the saddest day in our calendar. It was the day of the sin of the spies and the destruction of both the first and second Temples in Jerusalem.
Last month (Tammuz)I had previously taught that the energy was auspicious for rectifying our eye sight. On the month of Av the energy is conducive for rectifying our sense of hearing. “To hear” in Hebrew means “to understand”. To hear another is to fully comprehend his dilemma and emphasize with him. Hearing is receiving.
“The ear discerns words”(ozen malin tivchan- the initial letters of this phrase spell EMET=TRUTH). The sense of hearing is the sense of inner balance, which is the foundation of a rectified existence. In the physical aspect our balance also comes from the inner ear, which is made of two components:the cochlea (involved with hearing) and the vestibular system(helps with balance).
The Temples were destroyed because the people didn’t hear the warnings of the prophets and didn’t want to change their ways. Sadly today most people hear what they want to hear evading the truth and not wanting to change.
