“Toldos” (Generations), this week’s Parasha touches a very thorny and difficult subject. Yitzchak marries Rivkah and like Abraham and Sarah they too experience the very painful issue of being childless for a very long time.
The Torah says that Yitzchak implores and begs to H”S that Rivkah would conceive.
The word used is “v’ye’etar” which the Gemara (Yevamod 64a) also explains as “pitchfork”. Rabbi Yitzchak says “why are the prayers of the righteous compared to “pitchfork?” Just as a “pitchfork” turns over the grain and tosses it from one place to another, the prayers of the Tzadikim (righteous) overturn the attributes of H”S from Justice to Mercy.
Three of our Matriarchs:Sarah,Rivkah and Rachel suffered from infertility. Our sages explain that they were bringing down very holy souls. Their heartfelt prayers and the pain they experienced from being barren was necessary and served as a conduit to bring extraordinary offspring.
Our Tefillos are like spiritual vitamins and they are very precious to G-d. When we acknowledge that the blessing and the key for children comes from H”S, the more we will not take ever for granted the children we have and what a great miracle He did for us.
The education of our children begins way before they are conceived.Every prayer we make has an enormous effect on their future.
