Today we count the 30th day of the Omer with “Gevurah Shebe Hod” (Discipline in Humility). I find that this combination is best exercised with our speech.
When we are able to use it properly we will have the insight of when to say something and when to keep quiet. Sadly most of us fall into needing to be heard and acknowledged. There is nothing wrong with this need, it makes us feel alive, wanted, and appreciated. But we must be careful to not end up harming others because we need to be important. This is when our humility kicks in. Before speaking THINK first: is it True, is it Helpful, is it Inspiring , is it Necessary, is it Kind? If the answer is NO, then it is better to use our Gevurah and keep our mouths shut. Caring about others feelings make us humble people and making sure to not say anything that is not productive and it will have a negative effect makes us work our discipline.
Sometimes restraining ourselves from saying something is the best thing we can do and sometimes saying what needs to be said, even if it’s not the cool thing to do, is the best thing to do. Either way this capacity comes from our humility to recognize the truth at the moment.
If you are in a situation in which you don’t know which would be the right approach you can always consult with a Rabbi or someone who is knowledgeable on this topic.
