Today we count the 16th …

Today we count the 16th day of the Omer with “Gevurah Shebe Tiferet” (Discipline in Compassion).
For compassion to be healthy and effective it needs to have the discipline aspect to it.
In this weeks Parasha Tazria-Metzora, there is a great example of what this combination of sefiras mean.
We learn about the “Tzoraas” a very painful affliction, in which a person would get a type of leprosy in his/her skin because he /she spoke lashon hara (evil speech) about someone else. Since the people in the times of the Mishkan and subsequent Temple era, were in a very high spiritual state they would get this affliction in their skin when talking bad about someone else.
The person would not only feel shame but he would also feel what the person he talked about felt. Although this seems as a very harsh punishment, in reality it was G-d’s compassion towards the person to show him what he had done and feel it in his own skin so he could correct his ways.
When H”S sends suffering our way, although He uses His Justice to do it, at the same time He uses His compassion too because the real intent behind it is to help us mend our ways and for this we should feel joy.
