Today we continue learning strategies on how to battle our Yetzer Hara (evil inclination).
Last week we learned how a void in us can cause tons of trouble, because this is when we are the most vulnerable to be attacked by our evil inclination. The Maharal of Prague guides us into filling it with Torah study and acts of love and kindness.
In choosing kindness, sometimes it’s difficult to find a balance between one that is important enough to be significant yet not so big that it overwhelms you.
In general, the Maharal says that in choosing optional Chesed (kindness) that goes beyond your family, you should choose to do something that is in tune with your potential, in this way you will maximize your capacity without exerting yourself. For example you decide to visit sick people, or elderly people, volunteer in a food bank, etc…
This is concerning the Chesed you choose, but sometimes G-d sends us a Chesed we didn’t choose, which is really beyond our present capacity. For example, we are sent a personal test and there is no way out. In this case we must accept the challenge and as Cuban singer Celia Cruz used to say:”al mal tiempo buena cara”(to bad times a good face). By doing this, you will become the person who is capable of performing such heroic Chesed and a part of you which you didn’t even know you had will be revealed.
Remember that H”S is always trying to bring the best out of you, when you keep this in mind you will always act with your higher self and the Yetzer Hara will have no strength to get in the way.
