Today we continue learning and training ourselves on how to battle our yetzer hara (evil inclination).
The Maharal of Prague gives us an important principle on understanding the yetzer hara: If a person feels lacking, the yetzer hara will rush into fill the void. Therefore the best defense against the yetzer hara is to fill that void with good. A cup that is filled to the brim with milk will have no room for poison.
The Gemara states:
“Happy are you, O Israel, at the time you are busy with Torah and acts of kindness.”
The Maharal asserts that the yetzer hara will be silenced by the combined force of Torah and gemilas chassadim (acts of love and kindness).
Whenever you feel empty, be aware that you are the most vulnerable to be attacked by your yetzer hara. Negativity will creep in and slowly it will begin to take over you and when you begin to feel it, it has already taken a toll.
Use your spare time to learn Torah or volunteer for a worthy cause, don’t allow the void to be filled with poison, if H”S gave you a void is so you can do something incredible.
