Today is the 37th day of the Omer with “Gevurah Shebe Yesod”(Boundaries in Bonding).
Over one thousand years ago Rabbeinu Gershom banned the reading of other’s people’s mail. He taught us the importance of respecting the privacy of others.
Also Bilam when trying to curse the Jewish people for the King of Midiam Balak, only blessings came out of his mouth. One of those blessings is in our Siddur (prayer book) and till today we say it every morning “How goodly are your tents, O Jacob;your dwelling places, O Israel…”
Bilam was trying to find a fault in the Jewish people so he could curse them. When he saw how the Jews erected their tents in the dessert (not one looked at each other) he recognized this attribute of how they were so careful to not pry into others people’s privacy. Till today Halacha (Jewish law) teaches how careful we should be into not looking into others homes when walking in the streets and you can see from the outside. Putting boundaries in what we can look at keeps us safe from feeling jealousy and eventually divisiveness. When we respect others privacy we not only don’t feel envious but we also are able to bond with love.
