Today is the 10th of Tevet in the JEWISH calendar. It is a fast day in which we commemorate the breaching of the walls of the First Temple, built by King Salomon, by the armies of the Babylonian Emperor Nebuchadnezzar in the year 3336 from creation (425BCE).
Two and half years later on the 9th of Av, otherwise known as Tisha B’Av the Temple was destroyed and the Jewish people went into Exile.
On this day H”S decreed the destruction of the Temple, but he gave us time to repent and do Teshuvah so we could prevent this tragedy. H”S sent the prophet Jeremiah to admonish the Jews for their sins, but instead they put him in jail.
This story repeats itself generation after generation. Why is it so hard to return to what we are supposed to be? What is keeping us from learning from the past?
The answer is that H”S made us with a default mechanism, it’s not our fault that we fall and fall again. But He also gave us the tools to be able to overcome these negative tendencies and it’s up to us to desire to do the work. Without Him is impossible, we need to pray that He should help us go in the right way. That is our Job, to want!!! And if we open that first door, He will help us do the rest.
May we merit to rebuild the Third and Final Beis HaMikdash in our generation.
