To have “Oneg Shabbat” (pleasure of Shabbat) is a biblical commandment. We must delight in the Shabbat- “nachalat Yaakov avikha”- is the inheritance of our forefather Yaakov Avinu(Yishayahu 58:13)
The promise to Yaacov is that one who delights in the Shabbat merits an unbounded inheritance (Shabbat 118b).
Spiritually Shabbat is a day of receiving and not giving and the most important thing is PLEASURE. We were created to feel pleasure. We won’t do anything if we don’t derive some pleasure from it. In the same way, H”S created the world because it gave him pleasure.
This is why eating delicacies on Shabbat is so important. We reserve our best recipes for Shabbat.
The Shabbat table is a microcosm of the pleasure we will experience when Meshiach comes, H”S gives us a glimpse into the future.
This is why on Shabbat we forget about our business and material pursuits, our iPhones, computers, tv, etc…and we concentrate in rejoicing in the NOW enjoying our families, community and delicious food.
