This Torah portion of “Korach” teaches us that it needs two to tangle. Rabbi Chayim Shmuelevitz says that in the verse: “There shall not be like Korach and his congregation.”(Bamidbar 17:5) teaches us a very practical lesson on the principle of quarrels. The verse definitely is a prohibition to be involved in quarrels. When two people quarrel, each person usually has his truth and each one tries to blame the other for what he did or said.
In the case of Korach, he initiated a quarrel against Moses and Aharon because he believed that everyone deserved the leadership. Moses never quarreled with him, instead he went to G-d’s truth and did what H”S wanted from him.
Usually when people quarrel they end up debating who is right and who is wrong, which never leads to the ultimate truth and it causes a lot of bad feelings and pain.
When we stop blaming and condemning the other party, we will be calm to work on solutions in a peaceful way.
When the focus is in achieving peace then the dispute won’t become a quarrel, but instead we will be able to take the higher approach which is to ask ourselves “what can be said or done so all the people involved can be satisfied? How can we bring peace to the table?” The important thing is that both sides want to achieve the peaceful solution, but sadly like in the case of Korach there was no opportunity to achieve peace because his intention was war.
At the end the earth opened up and he got swallowed alive With all his congregation. Hard lesson and bad outcome. May we take this lesson to heart and always try to do what H”S wants from us which is to search for peace.
