This Shabbat is known as “Shabbat Nachamu” (Shabbat of Consolation), and it’s the first of seven Haftarahs that are read between the Shabbat after Tisha B’Av and Rosh Hashanah in which the Prophet Isaiah brings consolation after the destruction of the first and second Temples.
In the book of Isahia in the Tanach (Ch 40-66), He consoles us by promising a bright future “Console, yes, console my People, says your G-d.”
In the last verse of this Haftarah: “Lift up your eyes on high and see who created these, the hosts of heaven, and who brings out their host by number every day. He calls all of them by name. Because of His great might, and because of His strong power, not one is ever missing.”
This verse talks about the difference between celestial beings and us earthly creatures, which our existence in this world is not eternal, but nevertheless our souls are inmortal just like the celestial beings and this I so because this is H”S will. Once we will rectify and do Tikun Olam we will also become immortal in this earthly world once the world comes to its perfected state. And with this words Isaiah comforts us by showing us by telling us that this is not it, there is more and better to come.
Shabbat Shalom
