The word ELUL is an acronym of “Ani LeDodi VeDodi Li” (I am to my beloved, my beloved is to me “Song of Songs”).
This alludes to our relationship with G-d and our relationship to our spouse.
Sometimes we go through hardships in life and we feel abandoned, forgotten and mistreated so our relationship is back to back. One of the two needs to make the move and look at the other so we can begin to work on our relationship. The Ego gets in the way and it makes it very hard to be the one to initiate.
H”S really is never giving us His back, we are the ones who turn around, but He is waiting for us to be the ones to make the move, it really has to come from us. As it says in Song of Songs “Make a small opening like that of the head of a needle and I will open for you an opening through which caravans can enter.”
This is our job in the month of Elul, we have to find that loving feeling. Take one little step to move closer towards H”S (eat a little more kosher, keep a little more Shabbat, pray a little more, give a little more Tzedaka, etc…) show Him the love and He will help you attain the most lofty goals says Rabbi Baruch of Mezibush (grandson of the Baal Shemtov). And you will see how at the end of the month you will be face to face.
Live a little higher
