The first of the ten plagues that afflicted Egypt before the Jewish Exodus was the plague of blood. This plague transformed the cold river water into warm blood, signifying the transformation of cold indifference towards creating empathy into the suffering of others.
A similar lesson applies to anyone striving to leave the slavery of their inner Egypt – the tyranny of their material drives and not yet refined bodily desires. Our first step is to replace any cold indifference to anything Divine and Holy with passionate enthusiasm for G-d, His Torah, and His commandments.
The Nile River was considered a G-d. In those days, their sustenance depended on it. As today, we too sometimes give such importance to where our living comes from that we make it a semi G-d, forgetting Who is really feeding us and sadly this makes people indifferent to the pain and needs of others, specially their own families.
