“The children of Israel shall keep the Shabbat”(Exodus 31:16)
Marital relations are profoundly related to the holiness of Shabbat.
Adam and Eve were originally intended to wait until Shabbat before engaging in marital relations. It is explained in Kabbalah that the essence of the sin- which precipitated the fall of all reality from the idyllic state of paradise was that they did not wait for the proper time to consummate their union.
The process of return to G-d “Teshuvah” after the fall began that Shabbat.
Shabbat possesses the power to rectify spiritual blemishes caused by the breaching of the holy covenant of marriage.
All types of pleasure and joy, both spiritual and physical, are elevated and sanctified through the cosmic union of husband and wife on the night of Shabbat.
Thus, Shabbat is a day of peace and holy union between G-d and Israel, between husband and wife, and between the spiritual and the physical.
When dressing your table for the Shabbat meal take into consideration that you are dressing a bride, this is why the Shabbat table must be regal and gorgeous, the best you have must go on it.
When you wish others Shabbat Shalom, remember Shabbat is a day of peace and harmony.
