The Ba’al Shem Tov teaches the meaning of this statement by explaining that one should consider there to be no greater reward in the fulfillment of a Mitzvah as the Joy and pleasure one feels when doing the Mitzvah.
Many people do Mitzvahs expecting to get something in return. Although H”S did create a “cause and effect” system, our whole kavana (intention) when performing a Mitzvah should be the Mitzvah itself. The only reason we do a Mitzvah should be LeShem Shamaim (for the sake of heaven), and when we are aware of what a great merit it is that H”S gives this Mitzvah for us we should feel immense joy and for us this should be the greatest reward.
The truth is, however, that the reward for performing a Mitzvah with joy is infinite.
