The Ark of Testimony, which housed the the tablets and was placed in the Tabernacle represented Torah. The rods had to remain attached to the Ark even when it was placed inside the Tabernacle. The reason for this is that when the JEWISH people needed to travel to a different destination, the Ark would be ready to go.
In our today life, this concept applies to us as well. When a person is immersed in Torah learning is as if he has “entered the Ark.” A person might become so focused on what he is learning that he might be oblivious to someone’s needs. The message of the permanent rods is that an Ark must always be ready to travel, even if it is in the Holy of Holies, the holiest place in the world, it must be ready to hurriedly travel to a place in need of light.
Once one of the Rebbe’s of Lubavitch was immersed in his Torah learning when he heard his grandchild cry in the room above. He stopped and went upstairs to look at the baby, when he saw his son right next to him learning Torah he asked him if he had not heard the baby cry to which he replied that he was so in to his learning that he didn’t hear him cry, which to the Rebbe replied, “when you hear a baby cry you must stop anything you are doing and take care of the babies needs.”
