In this week’s Parasha “Shelach” (Send out) Moses sends the heads of the children of Israel (one for each tribe) to scout the Land of Israel before they would enter it and take possession. Sadly ten of the twelve men that went in, with the exception of Yehoshua (Hoshe’a ben Nun) from the tribe of Efrayim and Calev ben Yefuneh, from the tribe of Yehudah, came back with false reports which made the people very scared and everyone started to cry. They cried so much that G-d said “If you are crying for no reason I will give you a reason to cry.” Since that fateful day, the 9th of Av, numerous tragedies have fallen to the Jewish people, including the destruction of our two Temples.
The Maharasha in his commentary says that their lie was their statement “that is its fruit”( Bamidbar 13:27)
By showing them some huge grapes, pomegranates, and figs , the spies were indicating that there was no wheat, barley, and oil which give a person sustenance was lacking and this was their lie. Sadly we are paying till today their negative report which created a turmoil with the people not wanting to enter the Promised Land with Emunah and Bitachon (Faith and Trust) in H”S Who had sustained them in a miraculous way since leaving Egypt.
How careful we have to be when we give information to others, specially in a time we’re fake news is everywhere. Before sharing something make sure it comes from a reliable source.
