Shavuah Tov! Wishing everyone a fulfilling, successful, and blessed week.
This week we read a double portion of the Torah with “Matos-Mas’ei.”
In Parasha Matos it says: “If a person makes a vow to The Eternal, or swears an oath, to impose a restriction upon himself, he must not violate his word ; he shall do according to whatever his mouth has uttered.” (Bamidbar 30:3)
People most frequently make promises when they are angry. Out of anger one can swear and make promises that one will never keep.
The Torah is very explicit about how counterproductive is not to keep our promises.
Anger is not a proper motivation for a vow or an oath, unless it’s a conscious decision to change a bad character trait and this will motivate you to refrain from transgressing.
When you impulsively say or do things out of anger, you are a servant of your temper, but on the other hand, when you decide that doing something can be spiritual harmful for you and others, and you decide to impose self boundaries, then you are becoming the master over your impulses.
