Rabbi Nachman said,” wherever I go, I go to Jerusalem.” The eternal message of Jerusalem accompanies the Jew every day of his life. He longs for Jerusalem the “city of peace” to find its complete fulfillment. He mourns for his Temple, which one day will be reestablished eternally.
We pray every day looking towards Jerusalem, we mention Jerusalem in our prayers, when we thank for our food, under the Chuppa a glass is broken by the groom in solemn remembrance of Jerusalem, earth of Jerusalem is placed in the coffin of our departed ones, and we conclude our Passover Seder and the Yom Kipur service with the words,”Next year in Jerusalem.”
We are in love with Jerusalem, we cannot remove her from our thoughts. As the Talmud states, “ten measures of beauty descended to this world, nine were given to Jerusalem and one to the rest of the world.”
For us Jerusalem is more than just a geographical location, for us Jerusalem is a state of mind which affects the heart of Jewish life in every age.
May the glory of the Shechina (Divine presence) be restored to the rebuilt Temple speedily in our day.
