Although the Talmud says that in these days we should decrease in our joy, this is something which deserves explanation. Our sages say that the biggest mitzvah is to “serve H”S with Joy”, so then how can we come to terms with this statement of the Talmud?
What the Talmud is saying is that we should decrease in doing things that bring us external joy like partying, going to concerts, going to Broadway shows, etc… But the internal Joy of learning Torah and serving G-d should never be decreased.
The idea is that this week we should focus on our internal Joy and the Joy we will experience once Meshiach comes and our Third Temple will be rebuilt, bringing with it the true Simcha of being able to experience the TRUTH, when the curtain will be lifted up and the Glory of H”S will be exposed. Until that day comes we should work on being joyful by just being able to appreciate the great privilege of being able to be.
