Shavuah Tov! Wishing everyone a blessed and successful week!
Today is the third Yurtzeid of my beloved mother in law Sarah bat Shalom Z’L.
A Yurtzeid (anniversary of a departing soul) is a very important day. Today the soul of the departed is granted an Alyah (an ascend), because of this it is a joyous day for the Neshama. When a person leaves this world his or her only direction is upward in the spiritual world. The merits they accumulated in their lifetime takes them to their destination, but the actions of their children, grandchildren and loved ones help the soul rise even higher going”from strength to strength.”
It is customary to pray for the soul in the three prayers of the day with the Kaddish in which we recognize G-d’s greatness and kindness to us. It’s auspicious to give tzedakah in their name. We make some L’Chaim’s and Kidush in their honor, also saying the blessings in the food for L’ilui Nishmat in their name. We remember them by talking about their good deeds in this world and we visit their resting place.
Most importantly is that those left behind continue emulating their good ways and in this way their effect in this world continues having an influence.
Although we miss her tremendously it comforts us to know that she still is connected to us and her Neshama is in a very good place.
One of her many special qualities was in the way she made others feel. She would always take her time when saying hi to someone by asking how they and their family were doing and would always say something nice to make the other feels special. I really try very hard to emulate this beautiful character trait.
