Shavuah Tov! Wishing everyone a blessed and successful week.
This week’s Parasha “Korach,” talks about Moshe and Aharon’s first cousin “Korach,” who staged a rebellion against the leadership of the Jewish people. “And Korach, the son of Yitzhor, the son of K’hos, the son of Levi, took…” (Bamidbar 16:1)
Rashi explains that the key reason for Koran’s rebellion against Moshe was that he was envious of another relative that received honor while he didn’t.
Envy is destructive. It prevents a person from enjoying what he himself has. Envy is one of three things that totally destroy a person (Pirkei Avot 4:28)
Envy is an emotion generated by our thoughts on another person. What he has, how beautiful she is, how happy he looks, what a big house, etc…
We must be very careful when looking at others and their possessions. In today’s world of social media Envy is one of our biggest challenges. Some people even become depressed by looking how “ perfect” others seem to have it.
How does one overcome envy? The key is to focus on what you yourself have and on what you can accomplish in this world. We need to constantly count our blessings and be immensely grateful for them.
Envy arises when a person looks and compares himself to others.
Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev commented that a truly righteous person’s main goal is to give pleasure to G-d. To such a person there is no difference if he or another righteous person causes pleasure.
But if a person’s main agenda is his own personal reward and he wants to do and have everything himself then at the end he will fall. Just like Korach, not only he didn’t get what he wanted, but he lost everything he had.
