I was singing this old lullaby to my granddaughter and while listening to the words I realized how deep they are and that the secret of life can be codified in a nursery rhyme. The Bal Shem Tov used to say since everything is hashgacha pratis (divine intervention) we learn from everything we see and hear.
The message I get from this song is that the boat is yourself going through life and you have to row and put effort. You should do it “Merrily” and happily understanding that life in this world is temporary and it passes like a dream.
