“Reuven was the first …

“Reuven was the firstborn of Israel. The sons of Reuven were Chanoch,….”(Bamidbar 26:5)
This verse teaches us that we should choose family life over living by ourselves. Besides the joys of a family and the many practical benefits, living with family teaches us to love and care for others.
A person has a natural love for his mother and father, wife, children, siblings and other relatives. Through this love we learn to express our love through acts of love and kindness to friends and other people.
In Parasha “Pinchas” the Land of Israel is divided into tribes. Although in the wilderness they lived for forty years like one big family, now they would be separated into different plots of land and would be counted according to their families. This is to teach us that although each person had his own property, nevertheless they should keep their family ties and their love for others should spread.
