Most of you must of answered “a black dot.”
The dot takes up less than one percent of what you were looking at. Why didn’t you say you saw a white space?
This is part of the human condition. We tend to focus on what sticks out instead of focusing on all the rest. On what is missing instead of what is present, and on what is wrong instead of what is right.
If we would focus less on the little black dot and more on the “white expanse” of blessings that are in our lives, we would be happier people.
During the weekdays it is very hard to keep this mindset. When we refrain from work on Shabbat, we reorient our attention away from the small dot of darkness and we can focus much better on the white expanse of goodness.
On Shabbat we can really appreciate what we have, living in a dimension that is free from acquisition for 25 hours helps us generate genuine feelings of being grateful which leads to feeling happy for the many blessings we do have.
This Shabbat make it a special point to be grateful for all the good and all the kindness H”S has given you and may this comunal feeling bring much more open and revealed good to all.
