Moses told the Jewish people: “When you build a new house, you must make a fence for your roof.”(Devarim 22:8)
Not only the Torah cautions us here that when building a house, one must make sure it’s safe for those who live there and those who come and visit. One might think “who would fall off a roof?” But you would be amazed how many unnecessary accidents can happen in ones home if we don’t make it secure for others.
Allegorically, “when you build a new house” means “when you set out to make this physical world into a home for G-d.” When we live a life of high purpose, making every deed count in our relationship with H”S by revealing its inner Divine essence, we make it a vehicle for spirituality. Our brain becomes a home which needs to have a fence in the roof so we can create boundaries that will aid us in this mission and avoid being dragged into superficiality and twisted ways of thinking that might take us in a complete different direction than the one we are aiming for. Our focus when involving ourselves in the physical world should be in making it a better place in a selfless way, and this can only be achieved when we put the necessary boundaries that will help us succeed.
