Moses told the Jewish people: “In order for a man to divorce his wife, he must write her a bill of divorce.” (Devarim 24:1)
Everything that we experience in our physical existence is grounded in our spiritual existence too. Allegorically, each of us has a particular Divine mission which we are married to. This is within the greater context of our collective mission to refine the world and transform it into G-d’s home.
Ideally, we should be happily married to our individual Divine mission. But sometimes we get discouraged and overwhelmed and we feel that is not for us and might even consider abandoning our present Divine mission.
Likewise in our marriage this also is true. Each home should be made to be a proper dwelling place for H”S. In a home where there is strife, animosity, and quarrels the Shechina can’t reside.
In such cases, the Torah allows us to consider a divorce, but before taking such extreme measures we are told to first try to persevere in our present mission. It often happens that the problem is not with the mission but with ourselves.
As with marriage itself, maintaining marital harmony, with our soul’s mission mate, we should first look within ourselves and try to transform our portion of reality into G-d’s true home.
