Light and darkness are two opposing forces, the interesting thing is that although darkness would seem to be very powerful in reality darkness has no substance of its own, it is merely the lack of light. To combat darkness you just have to bring in some light and from there on it is a one sided battle. A little light will dissipate a lot of darkness. Just try it out, in a dark room light a match and you will see how there is no more darkness.
Shlomo Hamelech teaches that the advantage of light over darkness is a profound analogy for the battle between wisdom over foolishness.
The Alter Rebbe explains in Tanya: we all have the ability to overcome the powerful desires of the heart and body by simply awakening the mind. This would be compared to turning on the switch in a dark room.
