“Kiddush,”the first …

By June 7, 2019 No Comments

“Kiddush,”the first blessing in which we begin our Shabbat meal sets the tone for the next 25 magical hours.
“…so the heavens and the earth were finished…”(Bereshit 2:1)
G-d is Creator, and since part of the definition of “G-d is One” is that He has no needs, then this act of creation must be one with no desire for return. It is an act of giving based on the purest love.
We can connect to this concept when we give love to a baby, we are expecting nothing in return. The more we give, the more our love continues to grow.
The Kiddush continues:
“… He made us holy…favored us… gave us His Holy Shabbat… marking the Exodus from Egypt…”
Who is this creation for? It is for us. G-d created the world for us, gave us Shabbat, took us out of Egypt, and made us special.
The word Kiddush comes from the word “kodesh” (Holy); something or someone is “kodesh,” when he separates from the unholy, when we elevate the physical to the spiritual. This is Shabbat, “a holy day unto us,” on this day we take everything that we have worked for( our home, dishes, food, clothes, etc..) and we elevate them for a spiritual use.
