In verse 4:15 of Parash …

In verse 4:15 of Parasha Vaeschanan it says:”But you should greatly beware for your souls.”
Most people take care of their appearance, it’s so much more that there is a whole industry that profits tremendously from this. But how many of us take good care of our souls? How many of us take time during the day to guard what we think, say, and do? How many of us train their minds to think positively about others, themselves, and the world?
Rabbi Eliezer Dessler z’l, writes in his Michtav m’Eliyahu, that the natural inclination to live – the love of life and fear of it ending- has its root in a profound spiritual source within each person. The understanding that every moment of life contains within it boundless spiritual opportunity is enough to imbue a person with a love for living. A person who’s spiritual dimension lags behind his material needs will have no problem endangering himself and putting his life at risk.
Today we see this phenomenon very acutely within the effects of instant media and the need for some to do whatever they have to do to catch a moment of fame. Some even loose their lives for this pursuit.
When a person has a deep connection to his source of life, he would never have the need for this type of attention.
The idea that life is short, let’s have fun, let’s live life on the fringe… is a very shallow life, with no deep understanding of what life is about.
A G-dly life, on the contrary, focuses on: who am I? Why am I here? What is the purpose?
This train of thought will take the person to live a life of meaning and purpose, and most importantly a life of value and love.
