In this week’s Torah Portion “Tetzaveh” “You will Command”. The Torah describes at great length and with a lot of details the sacred garments of Aharon the Kohen Gadol ( high priest). There were eight garments in total that he used to wear. They were a breast plate, an ephod, a robe, a shirt( woven with indentations),a domed hat and a belt. Each one of these garments was of great significance and each one had its own function. Why would the Torah spend so much time talking about clothes? Who cares what we wear? The truth is that the garments we use to cover our body talk a lot about us. It tells us about our taste, profession, and other aspects of our life. In the case of The Kohen Gadol he represented the holy service in the Temple. The Torah teaches us even how to dress, not that it doesn’t let us have our own taste and creativity in our looks, but there are certain guidelines because down here we represent Him and just as a physician can’t come to work in shorts we also have to know that we have a job to fulfill that requires us to always look proper and modest. So ask yourself “what do I Represent with the garb I’m wearing”?
