In this weeks Parasha “Va’eira” which means “I was seen”. This is G-d’s reply to Moses anguished cry at the end of the preceding Parashah. In this Parashah H”S remembers the Jewish people’s pain.
We are introduced to the seven first plagues from the ten that G-d sent to the Egyptians to let the Jews leave Egypt. These plagues were designed to show Pharaoh and the Egyptians who was the true ruler of the world and also to give them of their same medicine. The first seven plagues (blood, frogs, lice, wild beasts, pestilence, boils and hail). These first seven plagues were connected to the seven emotional attributes (sefirot) and each one showed a malfunction in the Egyptians emotional state. For example, the first plague of blood turned the water of the Nile River into blood. The Nile River for the Egyptians was where the whole sustenance of Egypt came from and they saw it as a god, this was the source of their greed.
When G-d sent the seventh plague of hail, after Pharaoh wouldn’t give in because of his stubbornness, Rashi explains that there was a miracle within a miracle, the fire and the hail were mixed together( even though the hail is made of water)However in order to carry out the will of their Creator they made peace with one another. And this was enough for Pharaoh and at this moment he repented. H”S suspended the hail in the air and it melted falling like a light rain.
From here we can learn that doing Teshuvah ( returning) can change and stop any calamity. The reason for the hail had disappeared so there was no more reason for it.
