In this week’s Parasha (Torah Portion) “Naso” (Raise up), G-d instructs the Kohanim to bless Klal Yisrael at specific times.
The Chasam Sofer explains that the Birkat Kohanim is a bracha gashmis, a blessing for physical sustenance, pertaining to the wealth one accumulates in this world.
“May H”S bless you and safeguard you.” He shall bless you with material abundance and safeguard you from evil.
“May H”S illuminate His countenance for you and be gracious to you.” This blessing is so we find favor in the eyes of our friends and neighbors and that they will rejoice in our success and not feel envy.
“May H”S turn His countenance to you and grant you peace.” One who is wealthy, who has achieved material success, will quite often be weighed down by various worries. One may have anxiety over losing what he has accomplished and have the need to acquire more and more not allowing him to be satisfied. Sadly without the unique blessing of peace, the individual who is wealthy has no peace. He is driven by fear and anxiety. This special blessing is so he can be content and at peace with his lot.
So here Birkat Kohanim, raises the individual to live with joy and no worries. The greatest blessing and gift we can receive from G-d is PEACE.
