In this week’s Parasha “Toldos” (Descendants), the births of Eisav and Jacob are recorded.
“The children struggled inside her…. She went to (The Yeshiva of Shem) to ask G-d what was happening to her. Through Sheim’s divine inspiration G-d said to her:’two esteemed individuals are in your womb. Two Kingdoms will separate from your innards (one to wickedness and one to innocence). One Kingdom will become mightier than the other, for when one rises the other will fall. The elder son will serve the younger son.” (Genesis 25:22-23)
Rivkah was going to have twin boys. When she passed the Yeshiva one would struggle to come out and when she passed the house of idol worship the other one struggled to come out. Until then she didn’t know what was happening to her. Through divine inspiration she was able to know what awaited her. Eisav was evil and Jacob was good.
We all have an Eisav and a Jacob inside of us. There is a part that is holy, selfless and good and there is another part in us that is egocentric, animalistic, haughty and evil.
One of them is in control, both of them can’t rule at the same time. Whichever one we give strength to that is the one that will rule over our lives.
Be aware of this and you will be able to have more control over your actions. Try to think before you act “who is speaking to me?” You can always choose who you are going to listen to.
