In this week’s Parasha “Nitzavim” (Standing) And Moses third and final address to the Jewish People, delivered on the 7th day of Adar 2488BC, the last day of his life, he says
“The matter is very close to you in your mouth and heart to do it.”(Devarim 30:14)
Rabbi Chayim Shmulevitz commented on this that the Torah tells us that regardless of how far away one is, if he is sincerely resolved to become a better person, he will be able to make an immediate transformation of himself.
Before a baby is born an angel comes and taps his upper lip and says to him “be righteous and don’t be wicked.” The only free will we have is to choose between good and evil, it really is our choice. The opportunities to choose are given to us by G-d, but the choice is ours.
