In this week’s Parasha “Ki Teitze” (You go out), there is a very insightful Pasuk on educating our children that says “If a man has a wayward and rebellious son, who does not heed the voice of his father or the voice of his mother, and they discipline him but he still does not listen to them….” (21:18). If we read this verse carefully you will see that it doesn’t say “the voice of his father and mother”, rather it says “the voice of his father or the voice of his mother”. There are really two different voices educating this child. The father says one thing and the mother says another. This causes a lot of confusion in a young child’s mind and a lot of anxiety making the child rebellious and wild.
When educating our children H”S is telling us to make sure that both parents have the same message, even if they don’t have the same mentality make sure to talk it over and come to one voice. This will take out a lot of heartache and will help you build up well rounded children who are secure and feel loved.
